The figure of a sitting unemployed man with his head bowed against the light, for example, is both a document and a symbol. In his concentration on the dark side of life, photographer Ballhause creates images of great graphic beauty. The shadows cast by people and things play an important role in the composition of the picture. The helpless, forced idle hand of the unemployed appears in one of his photographs only as a shadow. This silhouette concentrates the statement about a political aberration that affects us again today. Back then it led to National Socialism.
